Last Friday My husband and I took Cameron for his third hair cut at LuLu’s Cuts at 48 5th Ave in Park Slope. I am happy to report that this time, not a tear was shed (during the actual cut – many tears were shed whenl it was time to leave the awesome Thomas the Tank Engine train set.) We got our balloon and left the shop – it was lunch time. What to do?
My husband remembered that we had spotted Bark, a hot dog joint that was just around the corner at 474 Bergen Street many moons ago, and we had always wanted to try it. I am SO glad we did. They make some seriously delicious gourmet hot dogs! We both got the Chili Cheese dog – I’m pretty sure it’s not your regular ball park frank, the chili is delish, and the cheese sauce… oh the cheese sauce. I’m not sure what was in there, but I could have eaten a lot more of it! We also each got a side of salt and pepper fries (we could have split one, although we ate most of the two,) and we each got a root beer. Cameron ate part of our hot dogs and fries very happily. They have lots of high chairs, and plenty of room for strollers and kids.
While not exactly a cheap lunch, Bark was a yummy treat, and the perfect ending to our hair cut outing. Next time you are over at LuLu’s, or in that neck of the Park Slope woods, check it out with your little one. And get the chili cheese dog! And maybe the chili cheese fries….

Before I had Cameron I would get my hair cut and colored about four times a year. After I had Cameron, things went downhill pretty rapidly. I managed to get a few cuts, but color took way too long. I just didn’t have the patience for it, and I certainly wasn’t going to spend time traveling all the way to the city for some “me time.” I’m sure I’m not the only mom out there who has trouble making time for herself. It’s not that my husband won’t take Cam – it’s more than I don’t ask him to. This is definitely something I (and maybe you) need to work on!
But, with my brother’s wedding approaching I knew something had to be done – and one of my mom friends had been suggesting for a long time that I see her friend Michaella who has her own private salon in Prospect Heights called Salon 718.
First I should say that I decided this all a bit last minute – I called on a Thursday, and I was able to get an appointment for cut and highlights that Saturday – I was so thankful! So – I walked over from my home in Fort Greene to Michaella’s Salon 718 which is located at 539 Bergen Street. FYI – if you are coming from Fort Greene or Clinton Hill you can easily take the bus down Vanderbuilt as well. She started on me right away after a brief consultation. She was very fast with her highlights – something I really appreciated (it can be SO boring sitting under those foils!) And, the woman who washes your hair (her name is Sunshine) is some kind of goddess – your scalp will enjoy the massage. I was cut, colored, and styled and out the door in under an hour and a half – which was pretty speedy in my book – and of course, I loved the results. The color was beautiful, and the cut was very wash and wear, which is exactly what I asked for. She even gave me some styling tips as she did the blow out.
Overall, Salon 718 was a great experience – so if you are looking for a local place to get your hair done, give them a try. Currently, they are running a promotion for $25 off color – just mention “Win” to get the discount. Also, on Thursday nights they are open late for Merlot Thursdays – where you can have a glass of wine while you get your hair done and your hubby puts your little one to bed. I am all about cutting Cameron’s hair myself – it’s free, and after all… when else in his life can I give him a really bad hair cut, and he won’t mind? But, after over a year of at home cuts Cameron’s hair was getting pretty out of control. I’ve never been really able to get a good cut around the ears or in the back. So I decided it was time to bite the bullet and call on the professionals.
In my neck of the woods, LuLu’s Cuts (48 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, (718) 832-3732) is pretty much the place to go. I was able to get Cam a same day appointment. Unfortunately, although we showed up on time, they were running about 15 minutes behind schedule. I was stressing because we had to get home for Fresh Direct, but Cam was having a great time playing with the huge train set that is in the front of the store.
Once it was our turn, they put Cameron in a firetruck chair, which he thought was pretty cool – especially the bell on the front. They gave me some options for videos to put on (Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, etc) that show on a little TV in front of the chair. Cameron was having a grand ole time until the cutting began, and then he freaked out. But, the stylist kept on going without batting an eyelash. She was done in 10 minutes. I did my best to keep Cameron calm, but it didn’t really help. Once he got his balloon at the end, everything was honky dory again… and his hair looked great! They also gave me an adorable little certificate with a lock of his hair commemorating the experience.
So, was it worth the $22 for a child’s cut? I say yes. Would I do it every time Cam needs a trim? Most likely no – I think alternating between home hair cuts and professional would be just fine for now.
Cameron has always had quite a head of hair, and it grows like a weed. I think we’ve cut it at least 6 times since his birth in November 08. And, as much as getting a nice professional hair cut sounds appealing, frankly, I don’t see the point in spending the money.
Cam gets his hair cut
This past weekend my hubby and I gave Cam his most recent hair cut, and we developed a new strategy to contain the hair – and wash him off quickly afterward. We cut his hair in the bath – pre bath time – then cleaned up as much as we could and put it in the trash, washed the tub out with the shower attachment, and then ran the bath so we could wash Cameron off.
It worked out pretty well – and the cut wasn’t half bad either. I think the more times we do the cut, the better we get at it. So don’t be afraid to try it at home and save yourself a few bucks! After all, it grows back!
