Get Excited! Truck Touch 2011 Is This Weekend!

We’ve had a few rainy days here in D.C. but the weather this weekend is actually looking like it will be pretty good.  So if you are looking to get out with your little one and have some fun, why not check out Truck Touch 2011!  If your kids love trucks as much as Cameron does, it’s sure to be a hit.  Here’s the info which was sent to me this morning by Suburban Nursery School (Thanks for the heads up!):

Cameron gets his Truck Touch on!

Join us on Saturday, October 15th from 10am-3pm for our biggest, most colorful Truck Touch ever! Suburban Nursery School has assembled a ton of trucks for kids (and adults) to explore and touch including: a pink dump truck and a pink trash truck; a fire truck and a tree-trimmer bucket truck; a lime green shredder truck and a big white snow plow; big trucks and small cars; and many, many more.

Enjoy home-made baked goods, snacks and lunch from some of your favorite local vendors (pizza and ice cream!!), facepainting, and take a tour of the school too! This is a great opportunity for you and your kids to climb on and pretend to drive all of the trucks they love to read and talk about.

Truck Touch will take place in the school parking lot at 7210 Hidden Creek Road in Bethesda, MD (20817), near River Road, off of Wilson Lane. The cost is $5 per person; FREE for children under 2. All proceeds benefit Suburban Nursery School.

Labor and Delivery at Sibley Hospital Part 2 – Tips and Tricks

My son Cameron was born in New York at Columbia Presbyterian hospital – and I have to say my experience at Sibley Hospital here in DC with Violet was much better overall (despite the rather dramatic delivery circumstances!)  Below is a post with what is hopefully some useful information if you are planning to deliver your baby at Sibley Hospital:

Pre Registration:

I’m guessing that most hospitals and OBs tell you to fill out pre registration forms before your due date, so mentioning this isn’t exactly ground breaking.  I only bring it up because it is so important.  You never know if you’ll go into labor early, or if your labor will be super fast like mine!  After sending mine in, I checked with the hospital to be sure that they got them.  I also called my insurance to be sure that all my ducks were in a row on their end.  When I called them I found out that I needed pre authorization from my OB – so it’s a good thing I checked.

Tour Info / Single Rooms:

The Sibley Hospital website has a virtual tour of the labor and delivery area which is good to watch.  But you can also take a tour in person which I found to he much more informative.  Email childbirth at sibley dot org and tell them your expected due date, the names of the people who would like to attend, your phone number, and your email address, and they will get back to you with tour availability.  On the tour they will show you the labor and delivery rooms, the nursery area, the triage room, the snack area, and the postpartum recovery rooms.  Even if you’ve had a baby already – if it was at another hospital I would recommend you take the tour. single rooms At Sibley, they have double rooms and single rooms for postpartum recovery.  Double rooms are covered by insurance, and single rooms cost extra (I think it was around $250 a night).  On the tour I asked if it was hard to get a single room (in New York they were pretty short on them) but the tour guide said they always had more than enough, and could even open up extra rooms on another floor if need be.  So as long as you were willing to pay, they would find a single room for you.  Personally, I think spending the money on a single room is more than worth it.  It allows your significant other to stay overnight (you can’t do this in a double) and it gives you more peace and quiet.

Ordering Food:

At Sibley you can place an order for food from the cafeteria any time between 6:30 am and 6:30 pm.  There is a fairly extensive menu of choices, and the food is decent (it won’t blow you away, but it certainly wasn’t awful).  You can order as many times a day as you like (one day I was hungry mid afternoon so I got an impromptu grilled cheese) and you can also order more than one thing at once (both evenings I was there I got extra sandwiches for my husband and for Cameron).  Also, you can place your order in advance and just tell them what time you’d like it delivered.  They always tell you it will be 45 minutes for the food, but I never waited more than 30.

Snack Area:

Both the labor and delivery area as well as the postpartum recovery area have a snack room that has various juices, milk, crackers and graham crackers, jello cups, and a few other random bits of food.  This room is open 24-7 and is always well stocked.  I went many times to grab a quick snack so I found this to be really nice – if you aren’t up and about you can ask your nurse to get you something.

Parking:

There is a parking lot at the hospital, of course, but while there I got a little tip from the tour leader – if you happen to leave after about 9:45 at night, the attendant is off duty and the gate will be up, so you can get by without paying.  Also, if you are going to leave in the day and come back at a later time, tell the attendant and he will give you a pass to come and go.  This way you can save a little money.

Classes:

One thing that I was really impressed with at Sibley were the classes that were offered, especially the breastfeeding class.  This class was lead by a great lactation consultant – it was really informative, and even though this was my second baby and I had breastfed before, I learned a lot.  The breastfeeding class takes place every morning at 10:30.  FYI there are also lactation consultants on duty all the time, and they drop in your room a few times a day to see how everything is going and give you one on one help.  There is also a discharge class offered every evening at 8:30 pm that goes over checking out of the hospital, and some basic baby care information.  I think this was more geared towards first time parents, but it was still useful to know the check out process worked so when we were ready to go it all went smoothly and quickly.

Extra Items to Pack:

I’m sure you have a hospital back packed – but I have a few additions you might want to include besides the usual comfy clothes and toiletry items.  The post partum recovery area is a busy place, and your room might be a little loud – especially if it’s near the nurses station like mine.  I was so glad that I brought my eye mask and ear plugs with me, so that when Violet was in the nursery I was able to get some much needed rest.  Also on the sleep front – I sleep with a small pillow between my legs, and it was really nice to have this as a bit of comfort from home.  And, I brought my house slippers so I’d have something to walk around in.  Pack your laptop if you use one all the time (like me!!) a charger for it, and your cell phone and cell phone charger.  Because we already have a son, my husband didn’t spend more than the first night at the hospital, and during the day he was often off with Cameron – so it was nice to have my technology to entertain me (see below about using the free wifi!)  Finally, you might consider bringing your own towell.  The ones they give you for the bathroom / shower are really small and not very soft.

TV vs wifi:

At Sibley they charge you $5 a day to use the TV in your room – but wifi is free.  They say there is only wifi in the cafeteria, but I had no problem accessing it in my room.  I used the wifi to watch Hulu among other things – so why bother paying for the tv!  It was also nice to be able to chat, send emails, and post on facebook while I was stuck in the hospital. :)

Discharge:

As I mentioned before there is a discharge class at 8:30 every evening.  Be sure to attend so you know what forms to fill out, where to sign them, and what the policies are.  Also, talk to your nurse on duty for your check out day and tell them you are planning to leave.  I was able to work with my nurse to get all my paperwork in order in advance so that check out was quick and efficient.

Mommy FTW Has a New Home!

Most of you know that I moved from Brooklyn to Washington D.C. with my Husband and Cameron last fall.  Well, we finally were able to find a house to buy, and this past weekend we actually moved in.  It’s been pretty hectic, and Cameron seems to be having  a hard time adjusting when it comes to his sleep routine.  I think he thinks it’s just too exciting to nap!  So, I have to apologize for the lack of postings – things have been so busy lately.  I hope to get back on track soon.

But, while I am here…. a small bit of local news – The Tenley-Friendship Library (4450 Wisconsin Ave. N.W D.C.) just opened today after being under construction for what seemed like forever!  The first toddler story time is tomorrow, Tuesday January 25th at 10:30 am.  Cameron and I are going to check out the scene and I promise a write up with pictures. Check out this article on TBD.com for more stats about the library and some sneak peek pics.  See you there tomorrow?

DC Area Parents, Check Out This Website!

I just found this great website (well really, they found me and posted my Wilson Aquatic Center Super Post) – it’s called Go Out and Play – What to Do in Arlington and Beyond.  Now I have to admit it’s very rare that I make it to Virginia, but Go Out and Play covers things all over the DC area, including postings on what to do on the weekends, and fun activities during the week.  So even if you’re not in Arlington, check it out for great ideas of things to do with your toddler.  The mom who writes it has a 2 year old, which makes her ideas perfect for me and my little one. :)

Also of note, on the right hand side of Go Out and Play is a list of Local Blogs most of which seem to be kid oriented.  I’m planning to bookmark these and check them out – one of my new years resolutions was to get Cameron out and enjoying DC more – and I think these are great resources to help!

Escape the Cold with your Toddler – Check out Amazonia at the National Zoo

Sunday morning my husband, Cameron, and I headed over to the National Zoo (part of the Smithsonian in Washington DC – and FREE) in search of something to do. Cameron and I go to the Zoo lots – and I knew there were indoor exhibits we could check out, and mostly avoid the freezing cold weather.

We parked in Parking Lot D (at the bottom of the hill,) and headed to check out Amazonia, which is about a 5 minute walk from the lot. The exhibit is made of two levels – the bottom level which you enter on has aquariums with HUGE (as big as me – no joke) fish and turtles, as well as sting rays. It’s really amazing to look at – Cameron was enthralled. By the way, at 11am they do the feedings, which are pretty fun to watch. Workers at the Zoo hang out by the aquariums to show and tell the kids examples of what the fish are eating and answer questions.

At the end of the hallway on the aquarium level is a set of stairs and elevator which take you up to the forest floor level. Here you see all the trees of the rain forest, and you can look down into the pools which make up the aquariums which you just saw below. None of the kids that were in the exhibit found this to be nearly as cool as the aquarium level, but it’s still neat to check out. Cameron loved the big trees, the flowers, and the birds that were there. You can also see monkeys if you look closely. Watch out, it occasionally rains a little!

As you exit the other side of the forest level you can take the elevator back down and there is a section that has some frogs and other creatures in aquariums. There is also a bathroom and water fountain. And then, you’ve made a loop and are back to the beginning.

Overall, it was an amazing exhibit for kids and adults alike, it kept Cameron perfectly occupied for nearly 2 hours, and it was nice and toasty warm. So, if you are looking for a FREE indoor winter activity in Washington DC, check out the Amazonia exhibit at the National Zoo!

By the way, if you live in Washington DC I highly recommend becoming a FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo) member.  Being a member has lots of benefits which you can read about on the Zoo website – but the one that was most important to me is that it allows you to park for free at the Zoo.  This means you can easily come and go and stay for as long as you want.  The FONZ membership pays for itself after just a few visits.

Find a Yahoo Group for Moms (or Parents) in Your Neighborhood

I’ve found Yahoo groups to be extremely helpful and informative in terms of meeting other parents, asking questions, finding used items, and getting doctor recomendations to name just a few things.  When in Brooklyn I was an active member of both the Fort Greene Babies and Fort Greene Kids Yahoo groups.  Through them I met most of my awesome mom friends, learned about great free activities in the neighborhood, and sold (and bought) lots of used baby related equipment.

Now since I’ve moved to Washington DC I’ve joined the AU Park (American University Park) Parents Group, DC Metro Mommies, and the Friends of Forest Hills Playground Yahoo Groups. These have been so helpful in terms of finding a new OB, or Pediatrician, scoping out the toddler friendly playgrounds, classes, and story times, and meeting new moms for playgroups.  So, I can’t ephasize enough how fantastic Yahoo Parenting groups are.

Find a Yahoo Parenting Group Near You!

Wondering if there is one near you that you can join?  Well, it’s easy to find out.  Click this link to find Yahoo Mom Groups by Location (U.S. State). You can then narrow down by city.  Want to look at a more broad selection?  Check this link to see the choices for Yahoo Parenting Groups.  Here you can choose to check out all kinds of things (groups for Grandparents, Dads, Babies and Toddlers, Blended families, Parents of twins etc – and in some cases narrow down by location).  Check out what kind of support you can find for your needs in your area.  I don’t think you will regret it!  Our parents didn’t have the internet to help them out when we were growing up.  Take advantage!!

Story Time at the DC Public Libraries

Cameron and I have been looking for fun things to do since we’re in DC – and Library story time seemed like a great (free!) idea since he enjoyed it so much at the Clinton Hill Library in Brooklyn.  I checked on the DC public library website to see what kinds of things were going on.  It turns out, there are lots of options, and their website makes it really easy to see what is going on each day of the week at each location.  This is awfully handy when you wake up and it’s pouring rain and you wonder what in the world you are going to do with your busy toddler (like yesterday!)

I live near the Chevy Chase library (5625 Connecticut Ave. N.W DC), and they have two kids of story times there.  There’s a “lap time” for kids up to 24 months, and a “toddler time” for ages 2 and up.  I have checked out both since Cameron is right on the dividing age line.  Both of them were really fun for him – the lap time is more low key with some singing, less moving around, and is a little shorter (30 minutes).  The toddler time had more music (most played from a boom box and you sing along), moving around to the music, more reading of longer books, and lasted longer (45 minutes).  After each session we went to the children’s section to look for books and hang out with the other kids.

Check out the Story time Calender on the DC public Library website to find out what activities are going on at the library near you.

Also I wanted to note that on nice days, it’s fun to check out the small playground behind the library.  It’s made especially for kids age 2-5 which was perfect for us.  Cam had a ball.  It’s a great way to spend a few hours.

Children’s Programs at the Chevy Chase Library

This week I’m heading back to DC with Cameron (for more pool time at the Wilson Aquatic Center!) so I decided to do a little research on the local Library (the Chevy Chase branch located at 5625 Connecticut Avenue) to see what sorts of baby friendly reading programs they have in case we’ve got some spare time.  Here’s what I found listed on the Friends of the Chevy Chase Library web site.  Looks like they’ve got some good offerings!

New Catagory – Washington DC

My loyal readers know that I grew up in Washington DC (in the Chevy Chase / Tenlytown area) and that my parents still live there.  Cameron and I have been visiting a lot lately – and plan to in the future, so I have begun to blog about our adventures there.

I hope my Facebook Fans of Mommy FTW who are in DC can get some use from this – I have also learned that a lot of my mom friends who live here in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill have some roots in DC – pretty cool!  Anyways, because of all the Washington DC related posts that I’ve done, and plan to do, I decided to add a new Catagory to Mommy FTW – Washington DC.  I hope that you all find it useful!
