Going back to DC for a visit

Cameron and I had such a great time in DC over Christmas that we are going back down today.  We’re taking the train together – so I will be sure to report on how that goes once we return!

I’ll try to post while I’m gone, but in case I don’t – have a great week everyone!

The Books I Found Most Helpful

The What’s Cameron Eating series: Ricotta Cheese and Squash, Avocado and Banana, Baby Yogurt and Banana, Baby Mum Mums, Cream of Wheat, Peaches, Waffles, Organic Puffs, Roasted Butternut Squash, Oatmeal with bananas and cinnamon, 67 Burger, String Cheese, Grilled Cheese and Peas

I hope you find them useful!

Leaky Diaper? Try going up a size.

I’ve loved Huggies Overnights from the first time we used them.  But recently we started getting some leaks.  Even though the package says that the size 3 is for “16-25 lb” babies, and Cameron was only 18lbs and change a month ago at his 9 month check up, I decided to move up to size 4’s (22-37lbs).  And now, no more leaks!  I plan to move up to size 4 for his regular diaper as soon as I run out of size 3’s.

Swim Diapers get a second life – UPDATE!

The other day I posted about a friend who had dried out her daughter’s swim diaper in the hopes of using it again.  Well, today Cameron and I were back at Clermont pool and I re-used one of his diapers.  It worked great, and I will definitely do it again!

Swim Diapers get a second life

The other day I was at the pool with my friend Yael and her little girl, Noa.  We were discussing the possibility of drying out swim diapers so that they could be used again.  After all, they are generally only worn for  a short amount of time, and not much happens (usually) in that time.  Yael said she would give it a try, and report back.  Here are her findings:

After our great day at the pool yesterday and realizing that the swim diaper we used was the last in our stock – and knowing that we wanted to swim again today and given that I had no patience for a quick morning trip to target – I wrung out the diaper and hung it from our drying rack near a window that gets partial sun.  24 hours later – it was completely dry and ready to go!  No odor -  pool or otherwise. I think drying out used swim diapers works – as long as they are not poopy!!  :  )

I’ll be trying this for sure for the rest of the summer, as I ordered one more pack of swim diapers and I want it to last for the rest of the season!

Diaper Rash? My Doctor Said Mylanta

Cameron had a little Diaper rash situation last week, so me being a paranoid first time mom… I took him in to see his pediatrician.  Her suggestion for a quick cure was a few easy steps:

1)Clean the area well with wet Viva paper towells (she said all wipes, even the “sensitive” ones have other chemicals).  She recommended Viva because they are the softest, most cloth like.

2)Air time – I use wee wee pads to catch any pee that might come my way.

3)Neosporin – she recommended the ointment kind over the cream kind.

4)Diaper cream – she recommended Triple Paste because it is very thick and stays in place well.

5)Mylanta – yes, Mylanta!  She said poop is very acidic and the Mylanta will help cut the acid for those times when he might not get changed immediately (such as nap time, or over night).

In a few days, the rash was all cleared up!

Update:  This is a pretty popular post so I wanted to add more info since, unfortunately, I’ve had some more experiences with diaper rash since originally writing this.

For Cameron’s basic diaper care, I don’t usually wipe him when I change him (unless it’s a poop, of course!)  I also don’t apply diaper cream unless I think he is prone to poop.  He is a regular pooper for the most part, so this works for me – but maybe not for you.

Skipping these two steps keeps him dryer, and allows his skin to breathe.  Since doing this, I am generally able to keep his diaper rash at bay – and also keep it from flaring up too badly when it does happen.

The Books I Found Most Helpful

A friend of mine who is about to have her first baby just asked me what books I found most helpful when planning for Cameron to arrive.  These three were recommended to me by a friend who had already had a baby (my baby guru), and I found them all to be very useful.

Baby Bargains

Baby Bargains

Baby Bargains: I’m one of those people who reads reviews obsessively to find the perfect product.  This book had great no nonsense reviews for all kinds baby related paraphernalia.  This info, combined with the reviews people post on Amazon, made me feel like I was making educated decisions.

Baby 411

Baby 411

Baby 411: Why is my baby’s poop black?  What developmental milestones are coming up? What is Mastitis?  How much should my baby be eating?  Do I really need to boil everything to sterilize it?  The answers to these and many more questions you never thought of but soon will are in this book.  For a first time parent, this book is extremely useful.  It’s not something you read cover to cover, but use more as a reference text, looking up questions as you come up with them.  A serious must-have!

Healthy Sleep Habbits Happy Child

Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child: My friend who was my baby guru (she has a 2.5 year old) recommended this sleep book, and used this method with her son.  It’s a bit dense to read (you might feel like you are back in college!) but I think it’s really informative when it comes to sleep and babies.   We’ve been using Dr. Weissbleuth’s methods with Cameron and people always comment that he is one of the happiest babies they know.  When he is awake, is is very observant as well as calm.  It is certainly an effort to do sleep training with your baby, but in the end both you and your baby will get more rest, and be happier for it!

iPhone App – Baby Log

This one’s for the mommies with the newborns.  You know when you leave the hospital and they tell you to keep track of all your babies pees and poos, and how much the eat… how many minutes, how many ounces?  It’s enough to make your head spin!  Throw in the lack of sleep you’ll be experiencing over the next few weeks and you’ve got one stressed out mommy (and daddy!)  My husband found the iPhone Application Baby Log to help keep track of things.

Baby Log

Baby Log

You just tap buttons on the screen to tell it when you’ve changed diapers (pee, or poo), fed the baby (Left breast or right, or how many oz), put them down to sleep or given them a bath. It then keeps track and gives you statistics like how much they’re eating and how many hours they sleep during a day.  You can export all the stats to Excel and other spreadsheet apps.  It also has a twins mode!

My husband and I would leave the phone out in the rocker so that when we changed shifts there wasn’t any need to explain what happened – it was all clearly written down.  And in those early pediatrician visits where I was asked for details on what Cameron was up to it was easy to supply them on command.  Although this app isn’t perfect (it can get a little slow once you’ve been adding data for a few months) it was really helpful in getting through those first few days and weeks.  At $4.99, I think it was worth the cost!

Sleeping through the night with Huggies Overnites

Hallelujah!  For the first time ever (with hopefully many more times to come,) my 7.5 month old baby boy has slept through the night – from 6pm to 6:20am.  Let me tell you, this mommy is ecstatic!  Of course, we have been working on this for a long time, but I think a large part of this victory is due to two things.  1) My sleep training book “Healthy Sleep Habbits, Happy Child” by Dr. Weissbluth and 2) Huggies Overnight Diapers.  I think on this post I’ll focus on #2, since #1 is a huge topic in itself.

In the past few weeks Cameron has become a tummy sleeper.  Overall, he seems to sleep better on his tummy than his back – and for longer stretches of time.

Except, we now had a leaking problem.  He had been waking up wet almost every night, and every morning.  This was totally new to me – I’ve always been a huge fan of Pampers, and never experienced many leaky diapers.  Obviously doing all this extra laundry was not cool, so I investigated “Overnight Diapers.”

The reviews on Diapers.com for Huggies Overnights were glowing, so I decided to give them a try.  Indeed, they worked.  I highly suggest them if you have an overnight leak problem.  Mommy FTW!
