The Perfect Life Jacket Floatie For Your Toddler

Cameron has always loved swimming.  When we were still living in Brooklyn Cameron and I spent many an afternoon at Clermont Pool at PS 20 cooling off.  Now that we are in D.C. we get swim at Cam’s grandparents house.  The most shallow area of the pool is 4 feet deep (unlike the indoor pool at the Wilson Aquatic Center which has a beach pool that starts at zero depth).  So, I knew I needed to get Cam something to help him swim on his own since I was going to have my hands full with our newborn.  I asked around to my mom friends to see if anyone had a floatie (life jacket, flotation device, etc) they could recommend.  I heard great things about the Sterns Kids Puddle Jumper – and the price seemed right so I went ahead and ordered it from Amazon.

The first time Cam wore the Puddle Jumper in the pool he was a little nervous, still clinging to me.  But as the time went one he became more and more secure in it.  By the end of our hour in the pool he was swimming on his own and jumping in the water.  The next day we went swimming again and he quickly was up to speed and making his way all around the pool.

I love the Puddle Jumper because it’s comfortable for Cameron.  Because of the way it fits around him, it can’t ride up.  It’s very easy for him to move around on his own and work on his kicking and paddling.  I feel confident that he is safe in the water.  It’s easy for me to guide him around with one hand holding the clip at the back to help him work on his swimming.  Overall, I couldn’t be happier – and I think Cam feels the same way!

Babies and Beer? It’s Stutengarten Brooklyn at Der Schwarze Kölner!

Last winter my mommy friends and I were desperately seeking a place to take the little ones where they could have a little fun and we could do some socializing.  The word around Fort Greene was that Der Schwarze Kölner was a really kid friendly spot that we should check out.  So, slightly dubious, our playgroup headed over and Babies and Beer began!  The get together was a huge success and word quickly spread around the parent set.

This year Der Schwarze Kölner has really stepped it up and started an amazing playgroup called Stutengarten Brooklyn which meets Monday -Thursday 2.30-5pm.  All they ask is for a minimum purchase of $5 – or a donation.  If you are wondering what you can purchase there to satisfy this amount (besides beer, duh!) the kids love the chicken sausage (it’s very mild) and Cameron was always a fan of the pretzel as well as the cheese.

I asked Randi, one of the owners, and mom to Sophie, to send me some pictures of Stutengarten Brooklyn since sadly I’m in DC and can’t attend.  I was blown away at how baby friendly they’ve made the space – with playmats, toys, and lots of open space.  Fort Greene and Clinton Hill have always desperately needed a playspace, and while this isn’t exactly that, it certainly is a good option on a cold or rainy day.  So if the winter is stretching on endlessly – check out Stutengarten Brooklyn Monday -Thursday 2.30-5pm.  Have a beer, or not, and meet some neighborhood parents.

To learn more about Stutengarten Brooklyn check out their facebook page.  You can also learn more about Der Schwarze Kölner at their facebook page, or on their website.

New Yorkers – Mulchfest 2011 is Coming!

Christmas is over and it’s time to recycle that tree (and help your local park in the mean time)!  That’s right – it’s Mulchfest 2011!  Fort Greene and Clinton Hill residents can take their trees to Fort Greene Park (Washington Park and Willoughby Ave entrance) on January 8th and 9th from 10am – 2pm and drop off their tree for chipping.  You can even take a bag of mulch with you for your garden or tree pit if you like.

Recyle your tree and help out your local park!

There’s tons of other locations all across the city – check the NYC parks website for all the Mulchfest 2011 locations.

*Please remember to remove all lights and ornaments before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site* For more information on Mulchfest 2011, check out the New York City Parks Department website.

Ho, Ho, Ho! Beer and Santa at Der Schwarze Kölner!

Most of my Fort Greene readers know that I am huge fans of the local Beer Garden Der Schwarze Kölener.  The owners and the staff have always been so child friendly, and especially in the long winter months it’s a great place to take your little ones, meet some fellow parents, and grab a beer – of course!

Ho, Ho, Ho, bring me a Bitburger!

Ho, Ho, Ho, Bring me a Bitburger!

Well this Sunday, December 5th, they are giving us one more reason to love them: Santa is coming to the Beer Garden!  From 3-5 pm Nikolaus (aka Santa Claus) will stop by with his big bag of presents. Recommended age 3-6 years, but younger kids are encourage to come and soak up the festive atmosphere.  I suggest you swing by, take some pictures, and relax!

FYI, as far as grub for the kiddos go, Cameron always loved the pretzel plate with cheese and pickle, and the chicken sausage is always a toddler crowd favorite.

Der Schwarze Kölner is located at 710 Fulton Street, Fort Greene/Brooklyn.  Even if you can’t make it this Sunday to see Santa, stop by some other time and enjoy some Babies and Beer!

Find a Yahoo Group for Moms (or Parents) in Your Neighborhood

I’ve found Yahoo groups to be extremely helpful and informative in terms of meeting other parents, asking questions, finding used items, and getting doctor recomendations to name just a few things.  When in Brooklyn I was an active member of both the Fort Greene Babies and Fort Greene Kids Yahoo groups.  Through them I met most of my awesome mom friends, learned about great free activities in the neighborhood, and sold (and bought) lots of used baby related equipment.

Now since I’ve moved to Washington DC I’ve joined the AU Park (American University Park) Parents Group, DC Metro Mommies, and the Friends of Forest Hills Playground Yahoo Groups. These have been so helpful in terms of finding a new OB, or Pediatrician, scoping out the toddler friendly playgrounds, classes, and story times, and meeting new moms for playgroups.  So, I can’t ephasize enough how fantastic Yahoo Parenting groups are.

Find a Yahoo Parenting Group Near You!

Wondering if there is one near you that you can join?  Well, it’s easy to find out.  Click this link to find Yahoo Mom Groups by Location (U.S. State). You can then narrow down by city.  Want to look at a more broad selection?  Check this link to see the choices for Yahoo Parenting Groups.  Here you can choose to check out all kinds of things (groups for Grandparents, Dads, Babies and Toddlers, Blended families, Parents of twins etc – and in some cases narrow down by location).  Check out what kind of support you can find for your needs in your area.  I don’t think you will regret it!  Our parents didn’t have the internet to help them out when we were growing up.  Take advantage!!

This Weekend – Move About Myrtle and Stoop Sale Extravaganza!

This weekend Move About Myrtle is back and the weather is looking lovely (so there’s no chance of cancellation like last week!)  This week there’s a schedule full of fun stuff going on which you can see on the Myrtle Minutes section of the Myrtle Ave Partnership website.  But I wanted to highlight the FDNY Smokehouse which will be located on Myrtle between Vanderbuilt and Clinton.  FDNY Smokehouse is a life size fire safety unit, complete with crawl spaces and safety instructions.  My toddler is completely obsessed with firemen and firetrucks, so you can be sure we will be checking this out!

Cameron has fun with sidewalk chalk on Myrtle

Also this weekend is the Carlton – Willoughby Block Association annual stoop sale taking place on Carlton Ave between Dekalb and Myrtle on Sunday.  This massive stoop sale is worth checking out!  Last year over 20 stoops participated so there’s lots of treasures to be found.

A Visit to Toren Condos – Green Luxe Apartments in the Sky!

In a previous post I highlighted all the awesome amenities that Toren has which are geared towards the family set; in this post I want to attempt to do justice with words the beautiful three bedroom condo which I was able to take a tour of, as well as tell you a little about the Green aspects of the building, which area also quite impressive.

The three bedroom, three bath condo I saw was in the process of being staged, so unfortunately I was not able to take pictures of it – although I did snap some of the view (wow).  I will include some pictures that Toren sent me so hopefully you can get a sense of the units.

The living space in this impressive three bedroom is a almost 2,000 square feet – and it certainly feels huge when you walk in.  It’s a bi-level unit – with the living room / kitchen space taking up most of the first floor.  There’s also a full bath with a large, deep tub (all of them are really deep – bubble bath for mom, anyone?)  There’s lots of closet space, and also a large bedroom on this floor.  Perhaps the most awesome feature of the first floor of this unit is that the living room area is open to the next floor – meaning that the ceiling is two stories high – making the room incredibly light and open.  The windows (and their amazing views) flank the walls.  The beautiful kitchen opens on to the family room – so it would be easy to cook some dinner while keeping an eye on the kids.  Overall – a perfect space to relax and hang out as a family, or to entertain friends for a diner party.

Upstairs there are two additional bedrooms and full bathrooms.  One of the bedrooms / bathrooms is the master suite, and this bathroom has a double sink (which I love – so practical).  The tub and shower are separate.  There’s lots of closet space on this level as well – and the layout would work well for a family with a young child or newborn.  There is an entrance on this level as well as on the lower level, so it would be easy to sneak in and out for date night after putting the kids to bed while the babysitter manned the fort.

Aside from the amazing condo I was able to see there are other sizes available, all with open floor plans and generous amounts of space.  The light let in by the huge windows along with the high ceilings makes the rooms feel large and welcoming.  On the Toren website you can see more pictures of the residences and also check out the floor plans for all sizes of units (unfortunately since the website is flash I can’t provide a direct link – check under Residences > Floor Plans).

For those out there who are eco conscious, the Toren has some pretty impressive stats you can feel good about.  All of the appliances in all of the units are EnergyStar appliances and each has an efficient hot water boiler.  The hallways are equipped with lights that have occupancy sensors (the turn off if no one is near by).  The building has a cogeneration plant which generates lower cost heat and power for residents on site.  FYI – Toren is also linked to the city’s power grid, which acts as a back up.  And – if there was ever another black out, Toren would still have power thanks to its cogeneration system.  Pretty amazing!

My overall impression of Toren was very positive.  Not only are the units gorgeous, but the building itself has so much to offer to its residents and to the neighboring community.  The roof decks are a great place for  playgroups for the kids, or to entertain your friends.  The pool and Yoga Studio are great places to sign the little ones up for classes and keep them busy all months of the year.  And if someone doesn’t organize a story time in that beautiful library, it would be a shame!  To see more pictures of these amenities and learn more about them, check out my first post about Toren.

Toren is located at 150 Myrtle Avenue, at the intersection of Myrtle and Flatbush. Nearby are a huge array of train lines (B, Q, M, R, 2, 3, A, C) and of course Fort Greene Park. Your closest playground is one of my favorites, the huge and rarely crowded New Fort Greene, which I profiled in my A Gem of A Playground series. Also, in the summer time, directly across the street you can find the Myrtle Avenue Farm Stand. To learn more about Toren you can check out their websites – torencondo.com and mylifeattoren.com (for more of an inside scoop on what it’s like to live there).

In the spirit of full disclosure, Toren has compensated me for this post – which means I was paid to go and check out their building and do a write up.  I want to assure you that the opinions expressed here are my own, and I was in no way told what I was to write.  Those of you who read my blog regularly and know me, know that I wouldn’t speak positively about something I don’t believe in.  If this write up as made you curious about Toren, please contact them and check it out for yourself.  I would be surprised if you were anything less than impressed!
